Common Moving Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
Common moving problems and how to prevent them — advice from professional movers.
Knowing common mistakes in advance helps you avoid them. Here's our professional advice.
Packing
Packing Mistakes
Using Plastic Bags
Bags can't be stacked in the truck → much less can be carried.
Bags tear easily → items get damaged.
Fix: Always use cardboard boxes. Get them free from supermarkets or drugstores.
Folding Box Flaps Without Tape
The bottom will open during transport.
Fix: Seal the bottom with tape in a cross pattern. Top can be I-line.
Boxes Too Large
160-size+ boxes become too heavy and the bottom breaks.
Fix: Use small boxes (100-size) for heavy items, large boxes (120-size) for light items.
Forgetting to Empty Fridge/Washer
Contents spill during transport → damage to the appliance.
Fix: Empty everything the day before. Leave cords/hoses connected.
Procedures
Procedure Mistakes
Forgetting Moving-Out Notice
You can't submit a moving-in notice without it → all procedures get delayed.
Fix: Submit at your old city/ward office anytime from 14 days before moving up to 14 days after (Basic Resident Registration Act).
Forgetting Gas Reservation
No hot water at your new home! Gas opening requires in-person attendance (15–20 minutes) — without a reservation, they can't turn it on.
Fix: Contact Osaka Gas 2 weeks to 10 days in advance. Slots fill up fast in March–April.
Forgetting Internet Transfer
Installation can take 2–3 weeks if work is needed.
Fix: Start the process as soon as you know your new address.
Forgetting Mail Forwarding
Important mail goes to your old address.
Fix: Submit at the post office or online (e-tenkyo).
Day-of
Moving Day Mistakes
Not Checking Access Routes
Large appliances (drum washer, etc.) won't fit through the door or hallway.
Fix: Measure doorway, hallway, and stairway widths when visiting the apartment.
Not Picking Up Keys
You arrive at your new home and can't get in!
Fix: Pick up keys the day before. Same-day pickup is risky.
Scheduling AC Installation on Moving Day
Two crews working at the same time → everyone waits around.
Fix: Schedule AC work on a different day from your move.
Too Many People in the Room
Not enough space for the crew to work.
Fix: Keep the number of people to a minimum during loading and unloading.
