Moving Day Etiquette: Greeting Your New Neighbors

When and how to greet neighbors when moving, what gifts to bring, and sample greeting phrases. Etiquette tips for solo movers.

Should You Greet Your Neighbors?

Greeting neighbors is not mandatory, but it's recommended to prevent potential friction. Moving day creates noise from loading and unloading, so a prior greeting leaves a good impression.

For solo movers, at minimum, greet the building manager or landlord.

When to Greet

At Your Old Place

Ideally the day before your move.

Apologize in advance for any noise or disruption from the moving truck.

At Your New Place

On moving day or the next day.

If you can greet before unloading starts, it serves as advance notice about the noise.

If neighbors are out, leave a note and small gift on the doorknob.

Who to Greet

Apartments & Condos

Units directly above, below, and on both sides of yours.

Building manager or landlord if available.

Houses

The three houses across from you and two houses on either side.

Appropriate Visit Times

10:00 AM to 6:00 PM is ideal.

Avoid mealtimes (around noon) and late evening (after 8 PM).

Choosing a Gift

Budget

¥500–1,000 is standard.

For the landlord, ¥1,000–2,000 is more appropriate.

Good Choices

Daily necessities: Towels, plastic wrap, tissue boxes.

Food: Cookies, tea, or coffee — choose items with a long shelf life.

Detergent: Dish soap or laundry detergent — practical and popular.

Things to Avoid

Perishable items (problematic if nobody's home).

Strongly scented items (personal preference varies).

Homemade food (allergy concerns).

Sample Greetings

At Your New Place

"Hello, I've just moved in next door. My name is ___. Sorry for any noise from the move. I look forward to being your neighbor."

If Nobody's Home (Leave a Note)

"Hello, I've moved into unit ___. I stopped by to introduce myself but you were out. I've left a small gift. I look forward to being your neighbor."

Safety Note for Women Living Alone

For safety reasons, women living alone may choose not to mention they live alone. It's perfectly acceptable to only greet the building manager.
