South-Kawachi East Area Overview
South-Kawachi East is at Osaka's southeastern edge, bordering Nara Prefecture. It comprises Taishi, Kanan, and Chihayaakasaka. The area has rich history (Prince Shotoku's Tomb at Eifukuji, Mt. Kongo, Kusunoki Masashige sites) and the lowest rents in Osaka Prefecture. All three municipalities are car-dependent societies — Taishi has no in-town stations, Kanan and Chihayaakasaka have neither.
Important: In December 2023, Kongo Bus Co. discontinued all routes. The replacement transit is the "Kongo Furusato Bus" (jointly operated by Kanan and Chihayaakasaka) plus contracted Kintetsu/Nankai Bus services. Older information referencing "Kongo Bus" is now outdated.

Taishi: Town of Prince Shotoku's Tomb
Pop. ~13,000 (2025). Historical — tomb of Prince Shotoku (Eifukuji) is the namesake. Famous for "Tomb Valley" (王陵の谷) and grape (Delaware, Kyoho) + mandarin orange production.
Important: There are no rail stations within Taishi. Residents use Kami-no-Taishi Station (Kintetsu Minami-Osaka Line) in neighboring Habikino City — ~30 min to Tennoji.

Pop. ~14,475 (April 2025). Houses Osaka University of Arts — strong art student/alumni community. No rail stations in town; access via Kintetsu Tondabayashi or Nankai Kongo stations + bus.

Pop. ~4,500 (July 2024). Osaka's only "mura" (village) and the prefecture's smallest population municipality. Birthplace of Kusunoki Masashige — Mt. Kongo's foothills with rice terraces. Designated as Osaka's first depopulated area on March 31, 2014 (now also Misaki Town).
No rail stations; access via Kintetsu Tondabayashi or Nankai Kawachi-Nagano + bus. Car society + winter snow risk — understand the lifestyle before relocating.
